New England Craftman Fireplace

..with beadboard cabinetry and shelving
Simple New England Craft style for a vintage condo in Cambridge MA

This project began with my clients wish for a fireplace and some extra warmth, but it quickly got more complicated. He found a double sided fireplace and liked the idea of one side facing the living room and the other side facing the kitchen. The kitchen now has a cozy breakfast area near the hearth, along with extra pantry storage, while the living room fireplace is surrounded by beautiful bookshelves and cabinetry concealing a media center.

The fireplace structure required a deep mantle shelf. We selected an old-growth heartpine plank obtained from an architectural salvage yard. Visible vertical sawblade marks suggest it was cut over 200 years ago, since circular sawblades came into common usage in New England mills around 1800.
